Tree Grabs
The vertical extraction tree grab is an excavator mounted tree grab that can either pull the trees out of the ground roots-n-all with minimal ground disturbance. Or remove limbs or tops of trees by breaking them off.
Tree grabs can be utilised for:
- Removing large trees in new or existing corridors
- Removing dead or dying trees
- Selective clearing
- Standing power poles or foundation poles
- Willow or noxious tree removal in creeks or rivers
- Removal of fruit/citrus trees
- Widening existing corridors of fringe trees.
The tree grab has total control over the material that it handles, making it extremely safe in tight or restricted areas. The tree grab can remove trees vertically from the ground with ease as the root system of the tree is not designed to withstand vertical forces.
A tree grab can remove a 20m tree in less than 60 seconds or it can break the top out and then remove the base within 90 seconds. The tree grab can also be utilised to hold a tree whilst it is being cut by chainsaw and then lower the tree with total control to the ground.

The Science of Vertical Extraction
Traditional land clearing often involves pushing trees over with a dozer, which rips up the surrounding soil and leaves massive root balls that are difficult to manage. Our vertical extraction method works with physics rather than against it. Because a tree’s root system is naturally designed to resist lateral (sideways) wind forces, it is surprisingly vulnerable to vertical upward pressure.
By lifting the tree straight up, our 20 to 30 tonne excavators can pop the root system out cleanly. This results in:
- Minimal Soil Disturbance: Ideal for sites where erosion control is a priority.
- Cleaner Waste: Without large amounts of dirt and rock clinging to the roots, the timber is much easier to process, mulch, or transport.
- Instant Removal: No need for stump grinding or additional excavation once the tree is gone.
Surgical Precision in Tight Quarters
When working in established corridors or near existing infrastructure, “felling” a tree is often too risky. The Tree Grab acts as a mechanical hand, providing total control over the material from the moment it is gripped until it is safely placed on the ground.
This is the preferred solution for widening existing corridors where “fringe trees” must be removed without damaging the healthy trees behind them or dropping debris onto power lines, fences, or roadways. In cases where trees are exceptionally tall or unstable, the grab can be used to “top” the tree—breaking off the upper sections first to reduce the height before extracting the main trunk.
Specialized Utility & Environmental Restoration
Beyond simple clearing, the Tree Grab is a versatile tool for specialized civil and environmental tasks:
- Riparian Restoration: Removing Willows or other noxious species from creek banks where traditional machinery cannot safely operate. The excavator can sit on stable ground and “reach in” to pluck trees out of the water.
- Infrastructure Support: The same precision used to remove trees makes these units excellent for standing power poles or foundation poles. The grab holds the pole perfectly vertical and steady while it is being secured.
- Orchard Renewal: For the removal of fruit and citrus trees, the vertical lift ensures the entire root system is removed, leaving the ground ready for immediate replanting without the need for heavy tillage.
Safety and Managed Felling
In scenarios where a tree is too large for mechanical breaking, the Tree Grab provides an essential safety buffer for ground crews. By holding the tree securely while a chainsaw operator makes the cut, the machine eliminates the danger of an “uncontrolled fall.” Once the cut is complete, the operator simply lowers the tree to the ground in a controlled manner, exactly where it needs to be for the next stage of processing.
